July results: ad revenue crossed $1,600 and the first payout landed

Hi Reader,

Quick one this month: ad revenue crossed $1,600 for the first time, our first AdSense payout actually hit the account, and we're starting to question whether digital product sales are even the right monetization path for this audience.

If you're new here, this is our portfolio channel. A real channel, real niche, built from zero with our own money and systems, run as a standalone revenue stream. Niche stays private. Everything else is open.

This is month 4.

The numbers

4 new videos posted in July, 18 total. Catalogue uploads are still carrying most of the views on their own.

  • Views in July: 197.2k
  • Watch time: 863k+ minutes (14.4k+ hours)
  • New subscribers: 1,294 net, total subs now over 4,000
  • Top video in the window: 67.8k views
  • Daily baseline: held 5k-6.5k views a day, peaked at 11.3k on July 20

That baseline is a step down from June's 6k-7.5k range with 19k peak days. Worth watching next month, not panicking about yet.

Running cost for the month: $450, down from $557 in June.

Revenue: July's estimated ad revenue is $1,636.50, with RPM now at $8.30, up from around $8 in June.

Separately, our first AdSense payout landed this month at $1,500. That's June's earnings arriving on the usual payment delay, not additional money on top of July's number. Worth keeping those two straight since they land in the same month but come from different periods.

Digital product sales added 13 more purchases this month, netting around $85 after fees. Amazon affiliate brought in about $3.

July's total earned revenue: around $1,725. After the $450 in costs, that's roughly $1,275 net, though only part of it has actually hit our account so far since AdSense pays out with a lag. Either way, this is the first month the channel earned more than it cost to run.

What actually happened

The website side is where the real story is. 4,903 sessions in July, 80% of them coming straight from organic video traffic. Email signups jumped to 2,542 for the month, more than triple June's pace. Once someone lands on the site, 50% of them convert into an email subscriber. That part of the funnel is working extremely well.

The gap is still upstream of that. Only a small fraction of video viewers ever click through to the site at all.

Here's the honest part: still only 13 product sales, even with dedicated emails pointing to it. At this point it looks less like a CTA problem and more like a fit problem. Our audience skews 80% 55 and older, and that group may just not be a strong match for a self-serve digital purchase. We're treating this as a real signal, not a sequencing issue we can fix with a better button placement.

Also in the pipeline

Inbound interest from sponsors and affiliate partners keeps growing, blocked by logistics tied to where we're based.

Month 5 goals

Now that actual money is coming in, we're doubling down on video output. We'll ship the dedicated CTA to the paid product directly in video, not just email, to get a real read before concluding.

At the same time we're exploring other monetization, leaning toward email sponsorships as a better fit for this audience. And we're still closing the video-to-website gap, since most of the traffic loss happens before anyone even lands on the site.

Will share another update in September, if you have any questions you can reply to this email.

Hey Reader, Quick one today, no pitch, just something useful. After working across 100+ YouTube channels, we keep seeing the same pattern. It's rarely a lack of effort. It's almost always one of three things. Strategy. If you can't name exactly who your last 5 videos were for, that's usually the real problem, not the ideas themselves. Systems. If every video starts from a blank page, you're rebuilding the wheel every week instead of running a process. Team. If content stops the moment you're...

Hey, It's time to dive into what we've been working hard on to get results on the channels we've been managing and running ourselves.Last week I spoke to six different business owners about YouTube. Every single one had the same problem. They had ideas. Real ones, built from years of experience, hard lessons, genuine expertise. Some had been sitting on a channel idea for over a year. Others had started, posted a few videos, and quietly given up. The problem was never the knowledge. It was...
